NEW YEAR PLANT WALK

Welcome the 2014 new year by getting out into the desert at this beautiful time of year! Notice early signs of renewal as small plant sprouts carpet the ground, and native trees, cacti, and shrubs begin to stir energetically. Ramble through rock-lined washes and low foothills of the Tucson Mts to observe desert life during the Winter. Look high and low at lichen, wildflower sprouts, limber bush, moss, ferns, fairy duster, legumes, cactus areoles, and other amazing desert wonders. The CCC was active in the Park in the fist half of the 20th century, and their rock work is evident throughout the area as well.
WHERE: Saguaro National Park West, at Sus picnic area (Kinney Rd bisects the park starting at main entrance off Mile Wide Rd, and Sus turn-off is close to the other end of Kinney where it meets Sandario Rd).
WHEN: January 11th, from 9:30am-12:00pm
HOW MUCH: $10/person, up to ten people. Please CONTACT me to pre-register, then pay fees the day of walk.
ETC: Wear comfortable/sensible walking clothes and shoes. Bring personal gear you need, like walking stick, water bottle, snax, sun protection, extra clothes, pack, camera, first aid, etc. Bring supplies for notes and drawing if desired. Please arrive 10 minutes early so walk starts on time. Carpool if possible.
OPTIONS: Bring your lunch and enjoy the peacefulness of Sus after our walk. Harvest desert lavender and creosote bush sprigs (as available), fragrant medicinal herbs, and tie into smudge bundles for later use. $3 per person, up to ten people, all supplies provided. Other options: the SNP visitor center ($10 fee to enter) is close by and provides bookstore, life-sized desert diorama, inspiring film, and park ranger resources. Stop in on your way home and support this local gem! The AZ-Sonora Desert Museum is also close by and is a lovely place to view native plants as well as animals. Fee to enter.
