MID-WINTER PLANT WALK

February 2, 2014 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Speaking in terms of Earth’s seasonal cycles (in physical terms, its axis to and orbit around the Sun), we mark various turning points on the continuous wheel of time we call the calendar, including the four (Roman calendar) seasons Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall, and Lunar Holy Days from ancient Gaelic/Celtic practices: Summer and Winter Solstices, Autumnal and Spring Equinoxes, and mid-season points Imbolc, Beltane, Lammas, and Samhain.   Seasonal celebrations of most cultures cluster around these same natural turning points throughout the year.

Right now it’s mid-winter, or Imbolc, a time to celebrate in whatever way/tradition you like!  Imbolc symbolizes the point in Earth’s seasonal cycle roughly halfway between Winter Solstice on December 21st, and Spring Equinox on March 22nd.  Imbolc is on Sun Feb 2, also noted as Candlemas (Christian), New Year (Tibetan, Chinese, Iroquois), Tu Be-Shevat (Jewish), Brigid Festival(Celtic).

Plant walk focus is Sonoran Desert natives, perennial food sources, common medicinals, earth cycle turning points, and whatever else is encountered.  The Park’s location also gives a broad view of the Tucson Basin and surrounding mountain ranges.  Bring a candle to light to represent the increasing warmth and power of the sun this mid-season, flickering toward the first hints of Spring.
